Before time as we know it began, gods and goddesses lived in the city of Asgard. Odin All Father crossed the Rainbow Bridge to walk among men in Midgard. Thor defended Asgard with his mighty hammer. Mischievous Loki was constantly getting into trouble with the other gods, and dragons and giants walked free. This collection of Norse sagas retold by author Padraic Colum gives us a sense of that magical time when the world was filled with powers and wonders we can hardly imagine.

Other than watching the movie Thor, I hadn't much knowledge of these characters and stories. Overall this book was very good. I like that it was a continuous storyline yes broke off into many smaller stories within to give more details about important characters, usually also with some sort of lesson built in. It was good, I've been reading the whole book to my 9month old while I put him to bed and I looked forward each night to reading a bit more. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in mythical or medieval literature. Looking forward to reading this again to my son when he's older.

The Children of Odin The Book Of Northern Myths Padraic Colum 9781636000145 Books Reviews

Having never read Nordic myth before, this was a great introduction to the overall myth involving the Norse gods and the strife that led to their downfall. I definitely recommend it for anyone interested in myth. Formatting is good as well, and I don't recall finding any errors.
One of my favorite tellings of the old tales. Colum puts a wonderful hand to these pages and, though certain passages could be seen as geared for a younger audience, the book as a whole sheds a wonderful light into the Northern beliefs.

I've always suggested this book to folks as a great read and introduction before delving in to the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda.
I had trouble reading this book at first, as it wasn't making any sense to me. I stuck with it though, and the more of it that I read, the more of it tied in with parts I had read before. It is broken up into kind of short stories, and as you read them they will tie into each other, eventually explaining the whole of the "myths". Once Parts from one story started showing up in another, I picked up on that, and the book started making sense to me, and I started enjoying it. I think that if you enjoy scifi or fantasy, you will too. Or if you enjoy reading myths, or tales, or if you are like me and enjoy reading pretty much anything you pick up. Give it a try! If nothing else...for something...different...
Just a note. If you're getting the free version available for the , it DOES NOT contain Willy Pogany's illustrations, even though 's product description still lists him as a contributor.

But it is still a great read, especially for free. Written in a very jejune, almost childlike, style. If you like mythology, you will be entertained by this book.

As a side, I recommend Edith Hamilton's Mythology for a good primer in both the Greek and Norse myths. Mythology
I am an opera fan, and my rating is based a lot on recently having watched all of Wagner's Ring Cycle. I knew, of course, that Wagner based the Ring Cycle on Norse/Germanic mythology. However, until reading this I had no understanding of how closely the opera follows the myths. There are some major differences, of course, but the entire story of the Cycle is included in this book and details in this book clarify some of the puzzles of the Ring Cycle. If you are an opera fan and have seen part of all of the Ring Cycle, I believe you will enjoy this book. Admittedly, it is somewhat simply written, but I found it a very enjoyable book.
I liked this collection, I wasn't looking for anything heavy or long or full of pretty pictures. I just wanted a collection of Norse Myths so that I could have a basic understanding of these tales that goes more in depth than Wikipedia or children's folk tales. I didn't personally find the translations to be that bad, a bit repetitive, but that's to be expecting from old writings. I found it very interesting to see how many Norse tales are similar to other European myths (namely Grimm Tales and Aesop's Fables) as well as the similarities to stories from the Christian Bible. As far as Myths go, you can't throw a stone and NOT hit something from Norse mythology in fantasy books, movies, comic books, video games, etc. etc. And it was nice to finally read a few of the actual myths for for the sake of comparison. Yes, I feel a little smarter, a little wiser, and a little more enlightened now, not to mention the ability to take note when someone shamefully rips off these tales, hoping you don't notice.
I am only about half way through "The Children of Odin..." and am already very impressed. The book is a series of short stories about Norse myths and legends in sequential order. The translations and wording are easy to read and understand. I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in Norse history and mythology. However if you are already familiar with this type of thing the book may be too basic and simple for you.
