Eleven days in the life of a mother as she tries to navigate herself and her family through the aftershocks of a scandal. Six years ago, aged 15, Rosalind's daughter, Stephanie, ran away with teacher Nathan Temperley, triggering a media frenzy and resulting in Temperley's arrest and imprisonment.

Although the family - Rosalind; her husband, Dan; Stephanie; and son Freddy - don't talk about what happened, their lives have been shaped by it and everything that came after. When Rosalind discovers that Temperley is about to be released from prison, she's forced to reexamine the events of six years ago.

I felt there was really only one likable character, and he didn’t add anything to the story. There was no suspense as to the identity of the “villain” in the story. A lot of wordy chapters that led to a predictable ending.

The Daughter Secret (Audible Audio Edition) Eva Holland Rachel Atkins Orion Publishing Group Books Reviews

This story unfolds from Rosalinds POV in both the past and the present. This story isnt just about Stephanie running off with her teacher, it's so much more than that. Holland has done an amazing job at capturing the effect that it has on not just Stephanie but on the rest of her family, the way they adapt to life together once she has been found. The way certain things are brushed under the carpet never to be talked about, but always lurking there like a dirty little secret. Because the issues raised with Stephanies disappearance are never resolved, when the family gets the news that Temperley is about to be released from prison its understandable that things start to fall apart... especially since certain family members have new secrets of their own they are trying to keep hidden.

This book wasn't on my radar until a few days ago when it literally landed in my lap for me to read. I pretty much looked at the cover, read the title, read the tagline and decided this would be my next read. The relationships between the characters, the tension on each page, the need to know how this would all be resolved and despite the fact that the story itself was a slow burner, this book had me hooked from the very beginning. So hooked that I devoured this in a day.
I really loved The Daughters Secret. For starters it was a bit of a departure in plot from the plethora of (mostly great) family drama novels I’ve read this year and had a particular depth and resonance to it that really appealed to me.

Eva Holland uses the past/present timeline to great effect here, painting a picture of the rifts in the family caused by her daughter absconding with her teacher years before, and now when he is about to be released from prison, putting new and deeply disturbing pressures on an already ruptured dynamic.

There is a great perception to the writing as we see the different ways the characters try to deal with the issues – none of them are particularly practical or indeed particularly likeable, but they are eminently realistic with an intuitively drawn depth that really gets you inside the issues. Ros especially, full of anxiety and neurosis, as the story unfolds and you see flashes of the home life Stephanie had, you begin to understand that there is more to things than meets the eye.

I was intrigued mostly by what would happen when Nate was released. Would Stephanie see him again? In that sense it was a real page turner and I was engaged all the way through. A story ripped straight from the headlines, imagnining the people behind the drama, The Daughters Secret was compelling, often sad and very authentic with a spot on pitch perfect ending.

Highly Recommended.

It was a good story if you really understood it Temperley brainwashed Stephie in going with him Stephie had a drinking problem probably because of her father, he was a cold unfeeling man who did not care about his wife or kids.
Tedious read. Just not worth wasting your time reading this book.
Very slow read. Was disappointed and had to make myself finish it(. Would not recommend .
I did not enjoy this at all. There are too many errors for it to be even remotely credible.
I personally did not like this book, the characters all grated on me and I felt it was really heavy going to read, however it did bring a lot of discussion at our book club meeting.
I felt there was really only one likable character, and he didn’t add anything to the story. There was no suspense as to the identity of the “villain” in the story. A lot of wordy chapters that led to a predictable ending.
