Physically and emotionally wrecked, Mike just wants a vacation in the Florida Keys with his two beautiful daughters. Unfortunately, he gets far more than that when walking corpses begin to threaten the lives of those he cares for most. Teamed together with unprepared, ragtag natives who only want to return to their everyday lives, he leads the fight against the Zombies' apocalyptic extermination of everything human. With his annihilation all but assured, Mike goes off the grid in the most beautiful setting imaginable - and leaves behind a merciless trail of Zombie obliteration.

Dr. George Milonas is a practicing Pediatrician in Racine, Wisconsin. He is happily married to Jennifer and is the father of Anna, Emma, and Matthew. He is the author of The Warrior of God and My Last Testament.

Once famously said, "The road to Hell is paved with adverbs."

For me the fastest way to tell an amateur writer who didn't get their self-published book professionally edited, is to count the number of adverbs in the first chapter.

'Off The Grid' has way too many (quickly, honestly, occasionally, unfortunately - and those are just examples the first few pages).

There is something magical in a good story, the writer instantly creates characters you want to follow and presents scenes that you want to explore and see how they unfold. This book has none of that. After the first chapter I gave not one hoot about Mike or his daughters. I felt more empathy for his ex-wife, leaving him sounds like the best thing she could have done.

I don't care about Mike's entire life history in the first chapter. The info-dump is boring. Who cares about who Mike was, show us his past by making him active in the present. The result at the moment is this boring resume of a guy who comes across as really dull, doing nothing except smile at his daughters.

After that the zombies were a relief of character development.

The story is just too uneven for me to give this one more than 3 stars (It's OK). The dialog and character interactions are also a bit on the weak side. Also, for me at least, the grand finale was pretty bad all around, both in concept and execution. If you are a fan of the genre, it's probably worth your time, just don't expect too much.
a awesome zombie book, imagine your in Florida on a vacation when the zombie apocalypse hits, everything goes upside down and you get with other people to survive..a good book and no military to interfere.one of the better zombie books I have read.
I enjoyed this read and would like to read a sequel to find out how things go for the boat people. One of the things I really liked about this zombie story is that the author actually used one of the most obvious of safe escapes from the landlocked undead...he put the uninfected on boats, duh! About time someone did this cause I've been yelling at the survivors of many books and TV shows to get on a stupid boat for several years now...finally!
The book was very good with the location being only in the Florida Keys. Rather than it being boring the concept creates a different storyline than just fighting zombies in the city. Characters are well developed and like able with a few intentional exceptions that you hate (Mike's wife). Easy and fun read.
Zombie novels have become my most recent guilty pleasure. I spend a lot of time on scouring the ebooks for just the right one. Imagine my surprise when I found this one and read about the author. I was born and raised in Wisconsin and worked as a psych nurse not too far north of where the author lives. After seeing that George Milonas is a doctor, working in Racine, Wi, I just knew I had to read this book. I was not disappointed. The character development came along nicely. The story held my interest and I found it difficult to put down. Yes, it started out typically, the same as many other Z novels I have read, but I really enjoyed the characters. It was fairly easy reading and I finished it in no time. But I really enjoyed it. Great work, Dr. Milonas!
The writing is somewhat stilted and one-dimensional, especially in the beginning. Even though there are descriptive words and passages, I never felt invested in the Florida Keys, where I've visited. Multiple mentions of sunrise or sunset feel forced and flat. Crucial elements of Mike's (main character) background weren't established until well into the zombie, Zeke, Zed (all used interchangeably, even a "revenant" thrown in) action begins. Speaking of said Zed action, it took a rather longish while to develop; just as I was on the verge of throwing in the towel, the action picked up. There's the typical storing, stealing and hoarding supplies, an escape by sea instead of via land and an inevitable but too drawn out resolution of Mike's deserter wife.

If I had to choose one word to express my overall opinion, it would be "flat". If I see sequels and they're cheap, I'll get them, but this isn't anything I'm actively searching for or paying full price for.
Not the best zombie fiction I've read, but far from the worst.

Character development was decent with the main character but the supporting characters were just sort of there. I could relate to Mike as a father of two girls and just wanting to protect his girls from everything that could bring them harm. Beyond Mike though it was hard to relate to any of the others; even Ron and Lisa and I'm a Florida native.

The author hits the atmosphere and landscape of the keys pretty spot on. As for the locals though, this is more of a visitor's view of what Florida people are like. We have our eccentrics sure, but we're by and large normal people that prefer a warmer climate.

The thing that drove me nuts about reading this were the inconsistencies in terminology in regards to the villain of book, the zombies. Throughout this short read they're referred to as zombies, zekes, zed, infected, walkers, and probably a few I've forgotten already; I just found it really annoying to be honest and it detracted from the flow of the book. Also the sometimes lack of structure of the chapters and the inconsistency of paragraph and sentence structure throughout was distracting.

All in all I enjoyed it, but any recommendations would be prefaced with a warning about the issues I pointed out above.
